The role of the Sr. Food Scientist is to provide technical leadership and assistance in both the Oils & Fats and Snacks businesses to Marketing, Operations, Regulatory, Quality Assurance and R&D. Brands of focus will include Crisco and Back to Nature. This is a hands-on food science position, in which the individual will work with several cross-functional teams to develop new products and contribute to innovation, improve existing products and to help drive cost saving initiatives. The individual will be the technical liaison to various manufacturing facilities to ensure product quality and food safety standards are met throughout the commercialization process. The position will require travel for product trials and start-ups.

Responsibilities:

  • Help build and execute a pipeline of ideas in collaboration with internal and external partners.

  • Develop and implement multiple new product launches from concept through commercialization.

  • Design and conduct plant trials. Work with plant personnel on all manufacturing scale-up/trial run projects. Provide hands-on guidance during the manufacturing of new products.

  • Work with QA and Manufacturing to identify and monitor process parameters to better control the manufacturing process. Reduce process variation and ensure the processes run under control and with the least amount of deviation. Evaluate processing difficulties and recommend corrective action.

  • Formulate products in alignment/adherence with brand standards - i.e. non-GMO project, gluten free, vegan, clean label.

  • Develop and prepare laboratory bench prototypes.

  • Develop strategies to evaluate current products and research new technology to develop superior products.

  • Review and update existing standards, specifications, and requirements in order to comply with changes in regulatory and customer requirements. Assure quality products are produced in compliance with company specifications and GMP standards.

  • Oversee product stability and shelf life testing.

  • Identify and lead continuous improvement and productivity initiatives.

  • Interface with vendors, suppliers, outside laboratories and consultants.

  • Attend appropriate scientific seminars and technical meetings to keep current with technological advances pertaining to R&D, Innovation, and Manufacturing.

  • Other duties as assigned or directed.

Skills, Experience, Education:

  • BS or MS in Food Technology, Food Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field

  • Five to Seven years of food R&D experience

  • Fats and Oils development and manufacturing experience strongly preferred.

  • Snack/Biscuit/Bakery development and manufacturing experience strongly preferred.

  • Must have strong knowledge and understanding of food safety, HACCP, GMP's sanitary design/controls for food manufacturing facilities, FDA food regulations and food technology.

  • Knowledge of non-GMO project, Gluten Free, Vegan compliance preferred.

  • Statistical analysis experience preferred.

  • PC proficiency in Microsoft -based applications: Word, Excel, Power Point.

  • Have a robust understanding of the functional characteristics of ingredients and processing capabilities and how they impact finished products to meet consumer expectations.

  • Must be capable of working independently with minimal direct supervision, and have good interpersonal and self-initiative skills

  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects, prioritize and manage complexity - from bench top through commercialization.

  • Strong demonstrated verbal /written communication analytical and problem solving skills; able to effectively communicate to all levels within the organization

  • Must be detailed and results oriented with a strong technical foundation.
